Simmons University Assistant Professor of Art History, Tenure Track

The Department of Art and Music at Simmons University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Art History to begin July 1, 2019. We seek an innovative educator and scholar with demonstrated excellence in undergraduate teaching, an interest in creative curriculum development, an active research agenda, and a commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration inside and outside the University.

The primary area and period of expertise is open, but should complement, rather than duplicate, existing departmental strengths in American and Latin American art. The successful candidate will be expected to teach introductory surveys of European and non-Western art alongside more advanced electives. They will also periodically develop and teach first and second-year general education courses based on their interests. We welcome applications from scholars whose work addresses interactions between different regions and cultures, and whose courses will contribute to a diverse and interdisciplinary curriculum.

We seek an educator with a demonstrated ability to work effectively with a student population that is broadly diverse, with regard to race, ethnicity, nationality, socio-economic status, sexual orientation, and gender identity. Interest in teaching undergraduate non-majors as well as majors, fostering relationships within the region’s rich cultural community, and using the City of Boston as a classroom is essential.

Responsibilities include teaching three courses per semester (six per year), advising and mentoring students, developing and maintaining a strong record of scholarship, participating in curriculum development, and service on departmental, college and university committees. Applicants should have a Ph.D., at least three years of undergraduate teaching experience, and a well-defined research agenda.

Located in Boston’s historic Fenway area, Simmons University is a private, non-sectarian institution that has prepared women for leadership in the world through transformative education that links passion with purpose since 1899. Today, Simmons serves nearly 2,000 students in a women-centered undergraduate program and nearly 5,000 students in coeducational graduate programs. The Department of Art and Music, housed within the newly-inaugurated Gwen Ifill College of Media, Arts, and Humanities, includes majors in art history, studio art, arts administration, and music. Located within the department, the Trustman Art Gallery hosts six exhibitions by professional artists and one student show each academic year, as well as gallery conversations led by faculty from across the university. The Art and Music Department curates and oversees the Simmons University Art Collection, which is installed throughout the college and provides unique pre-professional opportunities for student art history research and student/faculty collaborations.

Case Studies from Douala and Lagos” at the LMU Institute for Art History. The project will study the interrelationships between fashion and urbanity using the example of Douala and Lagos. Four case studies, led by Prof. Dr. Kerstin Pinther (LMU), Prof. Dr. Frank Ugiomoh (University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria) und Dr. Basile Ndjio (University of Douala, Kamerun) focus on aesthetics and symbolic aspects of fashion and style and its contextualization as well as medial presentation. In keeping with a spatial turn we inquire into the places of fashion.

The postdoc position is sought for the research project on Douala. It deals with the history, aesthetic and fashion practices in Douala.

We offer one post-doctoral position of two years starting as soon as possible. After a positive evaluation, the contract can be extended with one more year (a total of three years maximum). The starting salary is in accordance with the requirement of the LMU and depends on the relevant research experience.

You will have an excellent PhD in History of Art, Art Anthropology, African Studies, Textile and Fashion Studies, preferably with research experience in Africa. You are fluent in English and French; you have German language skills (B 1).

Description: The Kansas City Art Institute (KCAI), a national leader in visual arts education, seeks an art historian of Global/Non-Western art (not including Asian) focusing on areas such as African, South American/Pre-Columbian, Native American or a combination and on periods prior to the contemporary era to join KCAI’s Department of Liberal Arts faculty, a faculty committed to a creative and wide-ranging approach to these areas. The ideal candidate should have an understanding of the materials, methods, and processes in art-making, and will be joining a robust art history program that mentors 50 dedicated art history majors and double-majors, as well as students campus-wide.  This is a tenure-track position, and begins August 2017.  Salary is competitive with peer institutions.

Responsibilities:  The successful candidate will be an active participant in the education of studio artists and designers, and will teach foundation art history courses as well as upper-division art history electives.  Departmental duties include:  directing individual studies, supervising internships, conducting program assessment each semester, representing the art history program via presentations at various KCAI recruitment and orientation events.  The teaching load is 3/3.

The collection, housed in eight buildings with eleven curatorial departments and nearly one million square feet has many iconic works by leading artists, and mounts approximately 30 exhibitions a year.

The Department of Prints and Drawings houses a distinguished collection of works on paper ranging in date from the 15th century to the present. With holdings of approximately 12,000 drawings and 55,000 prints, the collection includes particular strengths in French 19th-century prints and drawings; British, French, and Italian drawings; Old Master prints; extensive 20th-century holdings; and a constantly growing collection of contemporary works on paper.

Reporting to the President and Director of the museum, the Chair is responsible for the exhibition, preservation and research of the permanent collections of Prints and Drawings and for the acquisition of works on paper for the collection. The Chair is also responsible for departmental and major loan exhibitions and for the publication of the permanent collection and management of the department, including the Paper Conservation lab. The Chair directs various department administrative functions, including allocation of restricted and endowed funds for acquisitions, selection of salaries and administration of loans. Conducts weekly staff meetings to review departmental priorities. Supervises Collection Manager in the cataloging of the collection and loan-related matters. Works with Senior Conservator of Prints and Drawings to review and approve treatments and set scheduling priorities for Paper Conservation. Gives public and scholarly lectures, organizes and participates in scholarly symposia and trips for various museum groups. Works with donors and collectors; raises funds for departmental acquisitions and activities. Acts as primary liaison to major donors. Writes grants for exhibitions, internships, and other museum projects. Represents the museum in media interviews, at professional conferences, and on government panels. Supervises and manages a staff of nine professionals.


The successful candidate will be a seasoned Curator holding a doctoral degree or its equivalent in art history, with a track record of scholarship, exhibitions, and publications in the field of works on paper. Specialization in the area of old master drawings preferred. Minimum of 8-10 years of experience working in museums and/or with objects; strong connoisseurship skills and keen understanding of materiality and authenticity issues. Minimum of 5 years of budget responsibility and managerial experience. Record of success in donor cultivation and fundraising. Record of success in public engagement and outreach, including but not limited to in-gallery experience, publications, digital formats, community programming, and academic teaching. Up-to-date knowledge of the market for prints and drawings, with a personal network of contacts (e.g. dealers, auction house specialists, collectors, scholars, conservators) in the field. Knowledge of French, German, and Italian as appropriate to areas of specialty. Familiarity with provenance issues, particularly as they pertain to acquisitions. The Art Institute of Chicago is a renowned, encyclopedic art museum housing one of the world’s most important permanent collections, including many iconic works of leading artists, and mounting approximately 30 exhibitions a year.  The Art Institute’s African collection includes over 400 works that highlight the diversity of tradition-based arts on the continent, with emphasis on the sculptural traditions of West and Central Africa. Included are masks and figural sculpture, beadwork, furniture, regalia, and textiles from countries including Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Ethiopia, Mali, Morocco, Nigeria, and South Africa. The museum’s collection of over 80 African ceramics is the largest in an American art museum.  Additionally, the museum’s holdings of Indian art of the Americas span more than 4,000 years and include outstanding works from across the United States as well as ancient Mesoamerica and the Andean countries of South America. Ceramics, basketry, textiles, stone sculpture, metalwork, painting, and beadwork present a remarkable picture of the indigenous artistic heritage and deep-seated patterns of thought and ritual performance throughout the region.
